UCCS OIS Student Success Story: Cruz

Cruz passed his drivers test

Cruz just finished his sophomore year at UCCS. He has lived independently in an apartment for two years and has done an amazing job learning to take care of himself. He has learned how to use rideshare apps to get to his local pharmacy, grocery shop for healthy foods, and his time management skills have skyrocketed! He’s worked incredibly hard to get to his commitments on time, step out of his comfort zone, and manage his schedule by balancing rest, free time, and campus involvement.

Cruz has had the goal of getting his driver’s license since he started college. After completing two semesters of the OIS Driver’s Education Seminar, taking many practice tests, and spending time on the driving simulator at Fitness to Drive, Cruz passed his written online permit test and earned his driver’s permit. He is now one major step closer to his goal and is continuing to practice for his driver’s license test.

With employment support from the OIS, Cruz found a job at Eden Oaks Woodworking Company. He has always enjoyed working with his hands and creating things, and college has given him more opportunities to explore and strengthen these interests through his job and machine shop class. At Eden Oaks, he gets to build skills and create products in a hands-on environment. He also learned how to take the city bus to and from work, gaining confidence and independence with transportation throughout the semester.
